Photo Gallery #65- Alsace, Part I
I
was actually only briefly in Strasbourg- most of the time
I was
there, I spent with a friend of mine in a small village approximately
40km away- after the big-city buzz of both Paris and, to a
lesser degree,
Strasbourg, it was really nice to see a completely different
side of France.

My
friend Aurélie, who I also met when I was living
in Utrecht in 2002- she and Emanuelle were flatmates,
and was generous enough to shepherd me around Alsace
for a few days.

Aurélie's
family lives in a small village called Ebersheim- the
nearest train stop and town of any size was Selestat,
about 7km away. |
Her
parents, who own a large dairy farm in the center of
town, strangely enough. They're clearly lifelong farmers-
as I recall, I took this picture at about 5:00 AM, and
it's obvious they aren't the least bit tired.

In
addition to the cows, I believe that the Isselé's
(the family) also grow wheat, and a whole series of other
crops. |
|
| |
Modern
farm life- enough to feed a herd of cows through the winter,
I suspect. |
The
Isselé's farmhouse, a classic Alsatian building,
which Aurélie told me was more than 200 years old. |
|
|
My
bedroom, quite a rustic change; aside from the electric
light, everything in the room looked as though it'd come
directly from the 18th century. |
| One
of the days I was there, Aurélie, her cousin and
I went on a tour of several of the small villages along
the Route de Vin (Wine Road), more touristy in
the summer, but beautiful all the same in December. |

|
We
didn't have any set plan, just cruising from town to town,
getting out, walking around a bit, and continuing. It was
pretty chilly, but a nice way to spend a day. |
| Most
of the towns we saw had a tower like this, some of which
are called 'Sorceror's Towers,' although I'm not sure exactly
why. |
