Photo Gallery #62- Wandering Paris, Part I

After the museums, landmarks and monuments, it was
nice to just meander through the French capital at my own
pace, checking out the sights and sounds of the 'City of Lights.'

The incline train leading to the top of Butte de Montmartre (Montmartre Hill), at the base of the Sacré Coeur.

One of the hundreds of Metro stops that run throughout the city. Paris has possibly the best public transport system anywhere, as you can be almost certain that no matter where you are in the city, you'll find a Metro stop within a block or two.
This is more of an inside joke than anything else- all of us here in Chad are Peace Corps Volunteers, i.e. PCV's. Appeler en PCV means 'to call collect,' but I still thought this was funny.

Another view of the Seine, with the long walkways on either side.

La Fontaine de Saint-Michel, (Saint Michael's Fountain), a short walk from Notre Dame and the Ile de Cîte.
Another view of Notre Dame.
Playing tourist...
In addition to wandering around, I also was able to meet up with friends of mine, like Emanuelle, who I first met a few years ago when I was living in Utrecht. She helped me find my way around, and put up with my somewhat fractured French.
I also got a chance to meet up with a few others. My Yarabinec (L), is the study abroad coordinator at San Francisco State, and was instrumental in my participating in the Europe in the World program in 2002-2003. It's a bit corny, but I would probably would never have joined Peace Corps were it not for his help. On the right is Mical Neill, a friend of mine from SFSU currently doing his Master's in Spanish Literature at the Sorbonne.
I met up with Mical one evening and we wandered around the Bastille district, where I saw the new Opera House, meant to make the music more accessible to the Parisian public.
Somewhere in Bastille.
The next day I went for a long walk- I wanted to stay warm, but after more than a year in Chad, I'd feel cold regardless, so I ignored it and set off. I began near the Forum des Halles, not far from the Louvre.

The main entrance to the Forum, a vast open-air garden.

I passed by the Bourse, Paris' original stock exchange.
I headed out to the riverside, and passed by Notre Dame once again.
