Photo Gallery #70- Brussels

With just a few days left on my vacation, I began to head towards Paris
and my flight back to Chad. In between Amsterdam and France, I stopped
for two days in Belgium, where I stayed with my former Europe in the World classmate Kasia, currently working at EU headquarters in the Belgian capital.

Because my time in Brussels was so limited, I had basically one day to see as much as I could. I spent the morning checking out the more touristy-type things, such as the fairy tale-esque cathedral, in the center of town.

I don't know how high the cathedral tower is, but it looks to be at least 100 meters.
The old city hall, on the Grand Place, Brussels' central square and tourist hub.

A few of the shops forming one of the square's boundaries.

The shops were a showcase of everything Belgium and Brussels are famous for: chocolate, beer, waffles, and more- not a bad place to be on vacation.
I spent most of the day walking around the old city, but met up with Kasia in the evening in the more modern section of town where most of the EU institutions are located. I took the subway as far as I could, getting out by the King's Palace, and walking the last few blocks.
The moon was out, although it was mostly blocked out by the streetlights and office buildings.
A modern European cityscape...
I arrived at the European Commission building (not the same as in Strasbourg), where Kasia works. She was in a meeting, though, so I wandered around. Because of the shape of the building, tall and rectangular with a curved glass roof, it's nicknamed 'the jukebox.'
I had some time to waste while Kasia finished up, so I thought I'd play around a bit.
I went up to the top floor and looked straight down at the abstract metal sculpture in the central lobby- it makes for an interesting picture, but it's also a good way to get dizzy.
Inside the jukebox?
