Photo Gallery #69- Snow Day

After spending the past 18 months in a place where 'cold' is
20ºC, winter in Europe was a shock at first. While I was in Amsterdam,
a big snowstorm came through, and I took the chance to cruise around
the city with my friend Kfir one day, enjoying every minute of it...

I was heading back from a day of sightseeing, and had just arrived at Central Station when the snow began to fall, and the wind started to pick up.

The next morning dawned gray and snowy, although it wasn't quite cold enough for the canals to freeze over.
Which was probably good news for all the houseboats parked along the edges.

The snow kept coming down though, creating a slippery, wintry cityscape.

Even then, a few tourists were going on canal cruises, inside heated boats.
The Dutch are absolutely fanatical about their bikes, even in a snowstorm. There are things even a Dutch biker wouldn't do though, like riding up and down the arch of a bridge, on a cobblestone street in the ice and snow.
With the snow, the city seemed deserted.
Except for Kfir...
And me.
We continued to walk around over the bridges and canals, although we were mostly frozen by now.
After warming up with a cappucino and a sandwich, we were ready to begin our wandering again.
Seemingly right on schedule, the snow began to let up, and the sky cleared.

It was only temporary though- within an hour, the clouds and snow returned...

And it was back to the frigid Dutch winter.
Later in the afternoon we went walking through Westerpark, just down the road from Kfir's apartment.
The snow stopped again, and we crunched along to Kfir's place.
I stayed with Kfir until early evening, and just as I was returning to the station, the snow began to pick up again.
By the time I made it back to Melanie's, winter was once again in full swing.
